ABOUT RETROFITTING

In Hong Kong, building energy contributes around 90 per cent of total electricity consumption and over half of total carbon emissions. The Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance (BEEO) has been fully implemented since 2012, with regular review of the Building Energy Code (BEC) and the Energy Audit Code (EAC) to uplift the energy efficiency performance of buildings by embracing innovative and low carbon technologies as well as international best practices.

Many existing buildings, especially those with aged building services equipment, would likely have tremendous potential to perform better through energy retrofitting. The public and private sectors can make reference to the BEC and EAC as well as the HKGBC’s Retrofitting Hub and Guidebook to prioritise and implement energy retrofitting in their asset management plan so as to enhance building energy efficiency and reduce energy costs. Building energy efficiency retrofit can effectively reduce building energy consumption, which would be one of the most effective means to offset rising energy costs, and also contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
