Retrofitting Strategy Installation of electromagnetic clamp-on / ultrasonic devices for condensing water system
Fouling inside the surface of condenser tubes will build up over time resulting in the increase of approach temperature of condenser. Fouling can be control by chemical and tube cleaning while scaling will be re-built when chemical added.

Electromagnetic clamp-on device is a non-chemical alternative for purifying and softening condensing water through an electromagnetic field. It does not require the addition of any chemicals to remove impurities and kill bacteria for the condensing water system for reducing the re-built of scaling.

Consideration
  • Reduce the cost for using chemicals.
  • Reduce water consumption for flushing and bleed-off.
  • Reduce scaling and corrosion inside condenser tubes and maintain the surface roughness in good condition.
  • Maintain the heat rejection capacity of condenser.
  • Installation of power meter, temperature sensors, and flowmeter or differential pressure sensors for monitoring the power, cooling energy and COP of chiller (Figure 1).
Estimated Saving

(TAPP,CPRE – TAPP,CPOST)/19 * 1/COP_CH * QBLDG * OPHR,yr

Where  COP_CH = 0.605*COP_CHSM + 0.395*COP_CHWN

COP_CHSM = (COPaSM + COPbSM)/2; COP_CHWN = (COPaWN + COPbWN)/2

QBLDG = 0.605*[0.77*(0.88*NCHSM*QCHSM + 0.12*NCHWN*QCHWN)] + 0.395*[0.596*(0.184*NCHSM*QCHSM + 0.816*NCHSM*QCHSM)]

TAPP,CPOST = 2 for copper condenser tube, TAPP,CPOST = 5 for tritium condenser tube

OPHR,yr = hr/day*day/wk*52
