Description of the building:
Private housing estate at Kai Tak comprises of two High-Rise towers and one block of Low-Rise building.
The clubhouse offers diversive facilities including an indoor playground. |

Retrofitted initiative:
The construction site is the clubhouse of a private housing estate at Kai Tak comprises of two High-Rise and one block of Low-Rise building. The clubhouse offers different of facilities including an indoor playground. The heat absorbed by the glass curtain walls from the solar that directly transmits to indoor. The air-conditioning system of indoor playground operates from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. to ensure human comfort, which results in an extremely high cooling load for the system.
To lower the indoor temperature, reduce air-conditioning consumption and keep the visible light, Chirucoat – HSG is applied to the glass curtain walls of the indoor playground. Chirucoat – HSG is applicable to glass and polycarbonate, heat energy is reflected to the outside and absorbed by the coating. It suppresses near-infrared rays and UV rays from intruding into the room. As the coating only reduces a small amount of visible light thus clarity will not be affected.
Observed benefits other than energy saving:
- Seamless finishes vs the finishes offers by heat shield films, good for large glass panels and those panels with curves.
- As over 80% visible light can be retained, the adoption of HSG coating embrace the architectural design with the installation of natural light system, while users adopting heat shield films, they need to scarify the benefit of natural light when choosing films with higher heat reduction rate and lower visible light rate.
- Efficacy good for 10 years.
General observations of the retrofitting project:
- Apply transparent heat shield coating on the surface of glazings and curtain walls which could minimize the heat from entering indoors.
- Project duration: 4 working days
- Execution difficulty: workers are required to attend a 3-day training workshop. The application shall be carried out by trained workers using paint rollers.
- Disturbance to occupant: slight smell of paint which dissipates within a few hours upon application.
